Using Weblogs in Foreign Language Classrooms: Possibilities and Challenges

Theoretical Justification of Using Web 2.0

Web-based foreign language learning started back in early 90s, but it had limited benefits since it was mainly based on Web 1.0 which is characterized as non-participatory, static, read-only entity. In contrast, Web 2.0 technologies provide environments where users can communicate and collaborate in active manners. Two major features that distinguish Web 2.0 from Web 1.0 are the platform-based usage of the internet, harnessing of collective intelligence, and rich user experiences. Thus, web 2.0 technologies such as weblogs, podcasts, wikis, and youtube provide language learners with the potential for a collaboration-oriented and community-based learning environment.

Exercise : acronyms

IT  stands for Information Technology

Information Technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data.

ICT  stands for Information and Communications  Technology

Information and communications technology (ICT), is the infrastructure and components that enable modern computing.
Although there is no single, universal definition of ICT, the term is generally accepted to mean all devices, networking components, applications and systems that combined allow people and organizations (i.e., businesses, nonprofit agencies, governments and criminal enterprises) to interact in the digital world.

CAI  stands for Computer-Assisted Instruction

Computer-assisted instruction (CAI)a program of instructional material presented by means of a computer or computer systems.

CALL  stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is often perceived, somewhat narrowly, as an approach to language teaching and learning in which the computer is used as an aid to the presentation, reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned, usually including a substantial interactive element. Levy (1997:1) defines CALL more succinctly and more broadly as "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning". Levy's definition is in line with the view held by the majority of modern CALL practitioners.

WBI  stands for Web-Based Instruction

Web-based instruction (WBI) is a hypermedia-based instructional program which utilizes the attributes and resources of the World Wide Web to create a meaningful learning environment where learning is fostered and supported. ( Khan, 1997 , p. 6)

CBI  stands for Computer-based instruction

Computer-based instruction (CBI) is any curricula in which students interact with a computer as a key element of the learning process. Although the term is used to describe a number of different teaching methodologies and curricula, an instructor is almost always present to organize and monitor student activities. Students complete exercises and view materials on a computer screen rather than receiving the information from written material or an instructor's presentation. This dramatic change from traditional teaching has far-reaching implications for the future of education.

CMC  stands for Computer Mediated Communication

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) is a process in which human data interaction occurs through one or more networked telecommunication systems. A CMC interaction occurs through various types of networking technology and software, including email, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), instant messaging (IM), Usenet and mailing list servers.

CMC technology saves time and money in IT organizations by facilitating the use of all communication formats.

TELL  stands for Teaching English Language Learners

The Teaching English Language Learners (TELL) professional learning program, suitable for all teachers with EAL/D students in their classes, assists NSW DoE teachers to identify and address the learning needs of students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) across the range of school subjects.

The TELL program is interactive and collaborative and aims to establish a learning community where participants share expertise and resources and apply effective pedagogy to support EAL/D students.

MUD  stands for Multiple User Dialogue

A MUD is a multiplayer real-time virtual world, usually text-based. MUDs combine elements of role-playing games, hack and slash, player versus player, interactive fiction, and online chat. Players can read or view descriptions of rooms, objects, other players, non-player characters, and actions performed in the virtual world. Players typically interact with each other and the world by typing commands that resemble a natural language.
